Will there be Khabib vs McGregor 2 rematch in 2021?
January 2021 UPDATE: Khabib retired from the UFC following his UFC 254 victory over Justin Gaethje. Conor McGregor is scheduled to fight Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 on January 23, 2021.
We’ve heard some talks about a potential rematch between the undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and “the face of the fight game” Conor McGregor ever since their first bout at UFC 229 back in 2018. Khabib emerged victorious against McGregor by winning that fight via submission in the fourth round.
Most recently, Nurmagomedov had a press conference in Russia where he made it clear on where he stands regarding a rematch with Conor and what it would take for Khabib vs McGregor 2 to happen in the near future.
“A rematch with McGregor? Am I interested in this fight? After Gaethje, I would like to fight anyone who beats Dustin Poirier, doesn’t matter if it’s Ferguson or McGregor. Tony and Conor – beat Dustin and I will fight you. I will agree to a rematch with McGregor if he comes back and beats Poirier…”
We can tell from the sound of this message that Khabib is not against the idea of giving McGregor another chance. For the longest time Nurmagomedov was saying that he doesn’t want a rematch with Conor and that “he doesn’t deserve it”. But most recently he changed his opinion.
In fact, at the same press conference, the undefeated Russian champ spoke very highly of McGregor’s striking skills saying that he thinks Conor is a better striker than Gaethje. “The Notorious” landed 51 significant strikes in their first bout and did the most damage to Khabib out of all opponents in the UFC.
So what are the chances that there will be a rematch between Nurmagomedov and McGregor in 2021?
Khabib is scheduled to fight Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 on October 24, 2020. It also looks like Dustin Poirier and Tony Ferguson will square off at UFC 254 as well and their fight will be featured as the co-main event.
“The Notorious” Conor McGregor is currently retired from the sport but without a doubt, he will make a comeback if there will be an opportunity to get a rematch with Khabib.
The UFC and Dana White are also very interested in Khabib vs McGregor 2 and we’ve heard about it multiple times even since Conor’s most recent “retirement”. No wonder, their first bout at UFC 229 sold over 2 million pay-per-views and made over $160 million dollars in PPV buys and ticket sales.
If Khabib defends his lightweight title against Gaethje, we could potentially see McGregor vs Nurmagomedov 2 in September or October of 2021.
Depending on the outcome of the Poirier vs Ferguson fight, we might see a few different scenarios (assuming the world will go back to normal at some point in 2021).
- Dustin Poirier beats Tony Ferguson
It is unlikely that UFC will give Dustin another shot at Khabib even if “The Diamond” beats “El Cucuy” in a dominant fashion. This result will most likely lead to either a rematch between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor (with the winner of their fight getting another shot to challenge Khabib) or straightforward lead to Khabib vs McGregor 2 as long as UFC will be able to convince Nurmagomedov.
- Tony Ferguson beats Dustin Poirier
Will UFC book Khabib vs Ferguson next if Tony will emerge victorious against Dustin Poirier (and assuming Khabib beats Gaethje)? It’s a tough call. Obviously, this fight will make the most sense considering their history and the fact that they’ve been previously scheduled to fight 5 times. And 5 times Khabib vs Ferguson fights were canceled…
Honestly, as much as we want to see a fight between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson, it might just not meant to happen. Even if Tony beats Dustin and becomes the next in line for the title shot, UFC might avoid booking Khabib vs Tony and proceed with a rematch between Nurmagomedov and McGregor instead.
With all being said, there is a very good chance that in 2021 we will see the biggest fight in the history of the UFC. A legendary rematch between the undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov who will be fighting for his 30th consecutive win and a former UFC lightweight champion, the biggest name in the MMA world, “The Notorious” Conor McGregor.
What is your opinion on this topic? Do you think there will be a rematch between Nurmagomedov and McGregor in the near future, possibly in 2021? Would you like to see this fight again?
