Khabib’s coach revealed who can defeat Khabib
Khabib Nurmagomedov’s coach, Javier Mendez, recently spoke to the Russian press and revealed the name of the UFC fighter that can hypothetically beat the undefeated UFC lightweight champion.
According to Mendez, Khabib’s teammate and training partner Islam Makhachev is the fighter that would have the best chance to beat Nurmagomedov in the UFC if they were to face each other in the octagon. Mendez stated that Makhachev is very strong and that during sparring sessions with “The Eagle” Islam was the one who had the most success out of all Khabib’s opponents.
Obviously, Khabib and Islam will never fight against each other as they are the best friends since childhood. But hypothetically speaking, Makhachev would be a tough fight for Nurmagomedov because he has a similar style and skill set to “The Eagle”. Makhachev is especially known for his slick wrestling, grappling, and ground game.
Khabib Nurmagomedov still remains the UFC lightweight champion despite announcing his retirement following his UFC 254 victory against Justin Gaethje. Most recently, Khabib had a meeting with UFC’s boss Dana White where he stated that there is a chance he will fight again if he finds a worthy opponent.
A 29-year-old Islam Makhachev is currently ranked as #13 in the lightweight division and he has a record of 7 wins and 1 loss in the UFC. In his last bout, Makhachev fought against a Brazilian Davi Ramos which he won via unanimous decision. Afterward, Makhachev was scheduled to fight Rafael dos Anjos last fall but he pulled out from that fight because of the staph infection.
At the moment, Makhachev is booked to compete against Drew Dober at UFC 259 on March 6, 2021.
