Khabib “looking for a fight”: Khabib and Dana White’s meeting in Abu Dhabi

The UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and UFC’s boss Dana White finally had a meeting in Abu Dhabi where they discussed Khabib’s future plans and a potential return to the UFC for one more fight. A few months ago, Khabib announced his retirement from the UFC after a UFC 254 fight with Justin Gaethje and getting to a remarkable professional MMA record 29-0.

“The Eagle” was very emotional following his victory at UFC 254 and in the post-fight interview, he announced that he promised his mother he will no longer compete in the UFC. According to Nurmagomedov, his mother doesn’t want him to fight without his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, who passed away in the summer of 2020 due to complications after being diagnosed with coronavirus infection.

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, Khabib’s father and also his coach in many of his interviews mentioned that Khabib’s goal is to retire after getting to a 30-0 record. This fact definitely left some questions about Khabib’s retirement right after a fight with Gaethje. Did Nurmagomedov make an emotional statement and will change his decision to retire now? Will he come back to the UFC for one more fight and go for 30-0 per his “father’s plan”?

Dana White certainly believes that the undefeated Russian champion was very emotional at UFC 254 and that he did not make his final decision. In one of the interviews, White stated “I have a feeling he might go for 30-0. I think that his dad wanted him to get to 30-0. I think he wants to honor his dad’s wish…”

Dana White and Khabib met in Abu Dhabi

Nurmagomedov and White finally had a meeting in Abu Dhabi, UAE on January 15, 2021, where they talked about “The Eagle” possibly returning for another fight.

Here is a video Dana White posted on his Instagram:

Khabib is not retiring?

At this point, we don’t know all details of their discussion but soon afterward, UFC posted on their Instagram a picture of Khabib and Dana with a capture “The next episode of “looking for a fight” promises to be can’t miss.”

We don’t know exactly if it means that Khabib will 100% fight again but it definitely sounds like Nurmagomedov and White found a common ground and agreed on something. “Looking for a Fight” sounds like “The Eagle” wants to return to the UFC and there is a high chance that he will compete in the Octagon once again.

It’s not a surprise that the UFC and Dana White looking forward to Khabib’s return. Nurmagomedov is one of the biggest stars in the organization and he brings a lot to the table with so many fans, followers, and connections all over the world (especially in the Middle East).

In fact, Dana White’s ultimate goal is to organize a rematch between Nurmagomedov and McGregor. White certainly thinks it’s a possibility depending on the outcome of the upcoming fight Poirier vs McGregor 2 at UFC 257:

In a perfect world, if Conor wins this fight, I’d love to see the rematch with him and Khabib. It’s the biggest fight that can be made, and it’s the fight that makes sense.

If Khabib fights again, who do you think he will face next? Will it be a rematch with McGregor, a super fight against GSP, or a title defense against Charles Oliveira? Please share your thoughts on this matter in the comments below this post.
