Islam Makhachev vs Diego Ferreira fight in the works?

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father and head coach of the Dagestan’s gym Eagles MMA, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, announced to the Russian press that Islam Makhachev vs Diego Ferreira fight is “currently in the works for an event in Brazil”. According to Nurmagomedov, this fight will be officially announced in the near future.

Islam Makhachev’s manager, Rizvan Magomedov, on the other hand, did not confirm Makhachev’s next fight but he said that “Khabib, Islam, and Zabit will all fight on the same card at UFC 249”.

35-year-old Diego Ferreira is on a 6-fight winning streak after his most recent submission victory against Anthony Pettis at UFC 246. Following this win, Ferreira moved up to #11 in the UFC lightweight rankings. The Brazilian is unbeaten since April 2015 when he suffered a knockout loss to Dustin Poirier.

In one of the interviews after UFC 246, Ferreira stated that he wants to stay busy and not planning to wait for a higher-ranked opponent in which case a fight against Islam Makhachev who is looking for an opponent makes a lot of sense:

“Right now, there is nobody that I want to face, I want to have one more fight outside of the top 15, I want to stay busy. If I enter the top 15 now, I’ll have to wait for someone to win or lose before I can fight again. I wouldn’t like to enter now. I want to fight outside of it a little longer, have lots of fights so I can make a name for myself…”

It is worth mentioning that Ferreira already has wins over two Dagestani fighters – he previously beat Rustam Khabilov and Mairbek Taisumov via unanimous decision. Islam Makhachev, on the other hand, in his last fight beat the Brazilian Davi Ramos at UFC 242.

What do you think of the potential matchup between Islam Makhachev and Diego Ferreira?
