Is Islam Makhachev related to Khabib?
Islam Makhachev is a mixed martial artist from Dagestan, Russia. Currently, Makhachev is a #14 ranked in the UFC’s lightweight rankings.
Islam Makhachev and Khabib Nurmagomedov are training partners and they are often seen together which makes a lot of people think that Makhachev is related to Khabib. How accurate is this statement?
As a matter of fact, Islam Makhachev is not related to Khabib Nurmagomedov. Islam grew up in Makhachkala which is the capital of the Dagestan Republic while Khabib and his family grew up in the village of Sildi. Sildi is a small village located in a rural area of Dagestan.
Nurmagomedov’s family moved to Makhachkala in 2001 when Khabib was 13-years-old (Islam is 2 years younger). Makhachev was in the same class in school as Khabib’s younger cousin Abubakar Nurmagomedov and it is how Islam got into training wrestling/combat sambo with Nurmagomedov’s.
Since then, Khabib and Islam became very close friends – “brothers” as Dagestani’s say. They’ve known each other for 20 years: helping each other out training and competing in wrestling, judo, combat sambo, and later on, mixed martial arts. Islam Makhachev was also coached by Khabib’s father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.
Nurmagomedov made his UFC debut on January 20 in 2012 against Kamal Shalorus while Makhachev joined UFC a few years later in 2015. Since then, Khabib became the UFC lightweight champion and Islam is currently on a 6-fight winning streak getting close to break into the top 10 in the lightweight rankings. Makhachev’s next fight is scheduled to take place at UFC 259 on March 6, 2021.
Islam and Khabib are often hang out together and they have a lot of mutual friends. Makhachev is also very close to Khabib’s family and his cousins Abubakar, Umar, and Usman. The relationship between the “Dagestani gang” can be best described as brotherhood.
