Dan Hooker will beat Dustin Poirier - UFC betting prediction

Dustin Poirier vs Dan Hooker Betting Odds & Predictions

The UFC lightweights Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker will square off in the main event of the UFC Fight Night on Saturday, June 27th. It’s going to be an amazing bout with a lot of action (unlike last week’s main event Blaydes vs Volkov), back-and-forth stand-up exchanges, plenty of nasty leg kicks, and, most likely, a knockout finish for one of the fighters.

Below, we will take a deeper look at this matchup, analyze bookmakers odds, and give you our betting predictions for Poirier vs Hooker fight at UFC Fight Night on June 27th.

Dustin Poirier, #3 ranked in the UFC’s lightweight division, lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in his last fight at UFC 242 which we predicted. Prior to Khabib, Poirier won the interim lightweight belt in a battle against Max Holloway and was riding a 5 fight winning streak.

It is crazy but Dustin Poirier has been competing in the UFC for almost 10 years. A 31-year-old Louisiana native has an impressive professional record 25-6-1 with wins over Max Holloway, Diego Ferreira, Anthony Pettis, Eddie Alvarez, and a current interim champion Justin Gaethje. You can check out the betting predictions we’ve made for Ferguson vs Gaethje fight right here.

Dan Hooker joined a group of elite top 5 lightweights following his last victory over Paul Felder. In fact, Hooker vs Felder fight was very close and a lot of people actually think that Felder should have won the decision. Either way, Dan Hooker did get a very important W and now he will be facing one of the best lightweight fighters out there in the likes of Dustin Poirier.

Dan Hooker is 7-1 in his last 8 UFC fights. His most notable victory to date came against current welterweight title contender Gilbert Burns about 2 years ago before the Brazilian moved up to 170 lbs division – it’s a pretty big deal.

Who will win, Dustin Poirier or Dan Hooker?

The main reason why Dustin Poirier is a favorite in this particular matchup against Dan Hooker is the fact that he recently fought for the title and he has wins against a lot of elite fighters (we mentioned some of his notable wins earlier in this article).

Another reason is that Dan Hooker’s performance against Paul Felder was not very impressive. “The Hangman” did not knockout Felder or destroyed him throughout 5 rounds. Their fight was close and Hooker just got a slight edge over Paul Felder.

So how can Hooker beat Poirier if he barely won his last fight via split decision, you may ask?

When it comes to predicting MMA fights, there are a lot of things that have to be considered.

Yes, Poirier has some very, very impressive wins against big names which Hooker is not at this point in his career. But we have to analyze this specific matchup Dustin Poirier vs Dan Hooker and look at their styles not just their most recent fights and results from the past.

“The Diamond” is primarily a boxer and he has some of the best hands in the lightweight division. He prefers to strike on his feet and rarely takes his opponents down on the canvas despite the fact that he is a BJJ black belt.

“The Hangman”, a former competitive kickboxer, is also primarily a striker which makes this matchup very intriguing. Hooker’s boxing isn’t as strong and technical as Dustin’s but he will have a reach advantage and will try to stay on the outside, keep Poirier at a distance with his kicks and a jab.

What are our predictions for how will this main event play out?

Dan Hooker will most likely be a busier fighter early in the fight. Like most City Kickboxing fighters, Hooker has great leg kicks and they will do a lot of damage to Dustin Poirier and his movement. Leg/calf kicks are extremely effective against boxers which we’ve seen in the fight between Alex Volkanovski and Max Holloway.

Besides leg kicks, Hooker will use his reach advantage at a distance and a variety of knees/elbow strikes at a closer range and in the clinch. Dustin will be landing good shots and combinations on “The Hangman” but from the fight with Felder we know that Hooker has a solid chin and he is a tough, tough fighter.

Poirier is also a warrior which he proved many times throughout his career but we believe Dan Hooker will be landing more damaging shots to his opponent. Nasty leg kicks from Hooker will be a difference-maker in this fight and they’ll be a big problem for “The Diamond”.

We predict that Dan Hooker will finish Dustin Poirier within distance, possibly via 3rd or 4th round KO/TKO.

Best bets for Poirier/Hooker fight

  • Dan Hooker to win +175

This is a great bet especially considering that the betting line on Dan Hooker went up significantly from +135.

A New Zealand native trains among two UFC champions from City Kickboxing – Israel Adesanya and Alex Volkanovski and he is hungry for his own success. He is extremely motivated to prove himself against the best of the best while Dustin Poirier’s motivation for this fight is questionable.

  • Over 2.5 rounds -150

Both Poirier and Hooker are very tough fighters and it will take a lot for one of them to fall/not being able to continue to fight. We don’t really see how their fight can end before the 3rd round unless Hooker KO’s Poirier early in the fight.

Poirier got a finish against Justin Gaethje in the 4th round and went the distance with Max Holloway. Dan Hooker’s fight with Paul Felder also went the distance. The chances that this bout will go into later championship rounds are very reasonable.

Poirier vs Hooker is a perfect matchup between the two very strong but stylistically different strikers. How do you see this fight playing out and what are your predictions and favorite bets for this matchup?
