Betting odds for Blaydes vs Volkov fight

The betting line for Blaydes vs Volkov bout opened up as Curtis Blaydes being a favorite at -235 and Alexander Volkov as an underdog at +200.

Unsurprisingly, a large majority of people are been wagering their bets on Curtis Blaydes and that’s why the betting line has moved pretty significantly.

As of Thursday, June 18th, Blaydes currently stands at -380 while Volkov is a heavy underdog at +350. This is more than 20% difference from the opening line.

Blaydes vs Volkov betting predictions

Putting your money on Curtis “Razor” Blaydes in this fight against Alexander Volkov seems like a guaranteed bet and easy money but I would think twice before doing so.

“Razor” is an overall better and stronger fighter than Volkov but it doesn’t mean that he can’t be defeated on one particular night. Blaydes is known for his takedowns and dominating top control on the ground while Volkov is a stronger and more technical striker.

It just seems like everyone underestimates Volkov’s skills while he is actually one of the top heavyweights out there at the moment. He is only 31 years old and already has a lot of MMA experience which includes fighting strong wrestlers and going through 4-5 round fights.

Alexander’s only defeat in the UFC came from Derrick Lewis when he got knocked down 11 seconds prior to the final bell in a fight that he was actually winning by a huge margin. Other than that knockout, Volkov’s run in the UFC is quite impressive.

In his last bout, he didn’t go all out and didn’t perform his best but still earned a unanimous decision win over Greg Hardy. It wasn’t impressive but there was a lot at stake for Volkov and he just needed to get a win no matter what. He did just enough to win and in a way, we can compare it to Adesanya vs Romero fight. You are not going to judge and analyze Adesanya’s skills simply by looking at his most recent fight with Romero, right?

Speaking of Blaydes vs Volkov matchup, I do see “Razor” as a favorite to win but most definitely not a -380 favorite which is ridiculous. Blaydes is not unbeatable and Volkov has a fair chance for an upset of the night. At the end of the day, it is an unpredictable heavyweight division where a better fighter not always wins.

Curtis’s most dangerous weapon against Volkov should be his takedowns, top control, and ground and pound. He will try to take Volkov down and finish him on the ground from the top position. Volkov has a 76% takedown defense and he has been taken down multiple times by Werdum so it is pretty safe to assume that Blaydes will succeed with taking him down.

A different question is if Blaydes will be able to get a finish. As I mentioned earlier, Volkov has the experience, he has pretty good defense on the ground (he survived Werdum), and he has decent conditioning for a heavyweight division. Volkov will not out-grapple Blaydes but he can survive his pressure, avoid taking major damage, and take it back up to the feet. And I can very well see this fight going the distance – and who knows how it will play out if it goes to rounds 4 and 5.

On their feet, Volkov will have an advantage over Blaydes. The Russian heavyweight is very good at fighting at a distance and he has a great jab. If he will be able to weather the storm of the first few rounds, limit the number of takedowns and keep it standing in rounds 3-5, Volkov will have a good chance to beat Blaydes.

So who should you bet on in Blaydes vs Volkov fight?

I personally don’t see any value at playing Blaydes unless the line is under -300. A lot of people are betting on Blaydes in parlays which involves a fair amount of risk for not a lot of reward.

I think this fight will be a lot closer than most people think and I actually don’t think that Blaydes will get a finish within distance. I can either see Blaydes getting a decision win or possibly Volkov winning this fight.

Placing your money on Volkov when he is such a big underdog around +350 makes a lot of sense. Obviously, it is a risk but it makes sense as the line opened at +200 and there is a lot of value in this bet. Once again, Volkov is a very skillful and experienced fighter and he has the tools to stop Blaydes.

What is your opinion about the upcoming bout between Curtis Blaydes and Alexander Volkov? What are your predictions for this fight? Who did you bet on, Blaydes or Volkov?
