McGregor beat Poirier 6 years ago
Conor and Dustin previously faced each other in the octagon 6 years ago at UFC 178. McGregor beat Poirier in the first round via technical knockout. This was part of the reason why McGregor was such a big favorite ahead of the rematch in the eyes of the public.
Following a devastating knockout loss, the first knockout loss in McGregor’s career, his future in the UFC is uncertain. Conor was planning to go after Khabib Nurmagomedov, the undefeated UFC lightweight champion, but their rematch seems very unlikely now that McGregor suffered another loss and looked out of shape in his fight against Poirier.
Khabib announced his retirement from the sport after UFC 254 fight against Justin Gaethje and it doesn’t look like he is going to come back to fight any time soon. The most likely scenario is that Khabib will vacate his lightweight title at some point in the near future.
